Background of the Study
Social inequality remains a pervasive challenge, significantly influencing access to quality education. In Awka South Local Government Area, Anambra State, disparities in income, gender, and socio-economic background have resulted in unequal educational opportunities. These disparities affect enrollment rates, learning outcomes, and overall academic achievement (Nwankwo, 2023). Numerous studies have indicated that children from low-income families or marginalized groups often face barriers such as inadequate school facilities, limited access to educational materials, and insufficient support services (Chukwu, 2024). The educational gap exacerbates existing social inequalities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and exclusion. Recent policy interventions have sought to address these challenges through scholarship programs and community-based support initiatives. Nonetheless, systemic inequalities continue to influence educational accessibility and quality. This study critically examines the influence of social inequality on education in Awka South, emphasizing the need for more inclusive policies that ensure equitable access to learning opportunities for all children (Eze, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Social inequality in Awka South Local Government Area results in significant disparities in access to education. Marginalized groups, particularly children from low-income families, face challenges such as poor infrastructure, inadequate learning resources, and limited support. These issues lead to lower enrollment rates and poorer academic performance. The problem is compounded by insufficient government interventions that fail to address the root causes of inequality. This study aims to investigate the relationship between social inequality and educational access, highlighting critical areas for policy reform (Okafor, 2023).
Objectives of the Study
To examine the extent of social inequality affecting education in Awka South.
To assess the impact of inequality on enrollment and academic performance.
To propose policy recommendations to ensure equitable educational access.
